How the Palworld Breeding Calculator Works

Unlike many monster-catching games that rely entirely on hardcoded pairing tables or random element mixing, Palworld uses a surprisingly mathematical system under the hood known as Breeding Power (often referred to in the community as "CombiRank"). Every Pal in the game is assigned a hidden integer value that dictates its rarity and strength in the breeding pool.

The Breeding Power Formula

The core mechanic of Palworld breeding relies on averaging the power values of the two parents. The basic formula the game engine executes is:

Target Power = Floor( (Parent 1 Power + Parent 2 Power) / 2 )

Once the target power is calculated, the game looks through the list of all breedable Pals and finds the one whose Breeding Power is closest to that target number.

It's important to understand the scale: Lower numbers mean stronger Pals. For instance, Blazamut has a power of 10, while Chikipi has a power of 1500. If you breed a strong Pal (low number) with a weak Pal (high number), the result will trend towards the middle (an average Pal). To breed the strongest Pals, you generally need to mate two Pals that already have low breeding power numbers.

Tie-Breakers

Because the game searches for the "closest" power, there are frequent situations where multiple Pals might be equidistant from the target average, or multiple Pals might share the exact same Breeding Power. In these scenarios, the game uses an internal tie-breaker based on the Pal's hardcoded Index ID. Our calculator replicates this exact logic to ensure accurate predictions, dynamically calculating distance offsets and prioritizing the correct internal tie-breaker index.

Exceptions to the Rule: Hardcoded Pairs

While the mathematical average dictates roughly 95% of the breeding outcomes in Palworld, the developers at Pocketpair included a series of hardcoded exceptions. These pairs bypass the math entirely to create specific, thematic results.

  • Special Combinations: Classic examples include Penking + Bushi always resulting in Anubis, or Mossanda + Petallia resulting in Lyleen. If the parents match a hardcoded exception, the game ignores the power average.
  • Legendaries: Legendary Pals like Frostallion, Jetragon, Paladius, and Necromus cannot be bred using the power math. To get an egg for a Legendary Pal, you must breed two of that specific Legendary together.
  • Sub-species: Elemental variants (like Jormuntide Ignis) often require breeding two of that exact variant together, or specific hardcoded base + element pairings, rather than relying on power averages.

Integrating with Development Tools

Understanding this matrix is essential for players trying to optimize passive skills. By finding paths through the breeding tree, you can pass traits from a Chikipi all the way up to an Anubis. Frequently Asked Questions

How does Palworld breeding actually work?

Every Pal has a hidden 'Breeding Power' stat ranging from 10 to 1500. Lower numbers mean stronger/rarer Pals. When two Pals breed, the game calculates the floor of the average of their two powers: Floor((Parent 1 Power + Parent 2 Power) / 2). The offspring is the Pal whose Breeding Power is closest to this average.

What are special breeding combinations?

The power average rule works for 95% of Pals, but there are hardcoded special combinations. For example, Penking + Bushi always results in Anubis, and Mossanda + Petallia always makes Lyleen, regardless of the math. Additionally, sub-species (like Jormuntide Ignis) often require breeding two of the exact same sub-species together.

Why is my resulting Pal different than expected?

If two Pals are equally close to the target average, the game uses internal tie-breakers (index IDs) to decide the offspring. Alternatively, you might have hit a hardcoded special breeding pair which overrides the standard math.

Can I breed Legendary Pals?

Yes and no. You can pass Legendary passive skills down through generations, but actual Legendary Pals (like Frostallion, Jetragon) can only be bred by mating two of that exact same Legendary together. You cannot breed a Jetragon using non-Jetragon parents.

What is the Breeding Power of Chikipi?

Chikipi has a Breeding Power of 1500, the absolute weakest in the game. Conversely, Blazamut has a power of 10, and Suzaku Aqua has a power of 30, making them some of the strongest.
